Green Hairstreak.

Hi all.

Is it me or do Green hairstreak,seem to be emerging later this year?

They are later than last year (and the year before) but both those years were much milder in early spring than has been the case in 2021. They seem to be emerging on quite a few sites now, however. By the end of the month they should be out pretty much everywhere.

Like all butterflies that over winter as a pupa, the forming up and hatching each year will vary by upto 6 weeks, last year we had 30 degrees in February, this year we had to wait to 30th March for mid-20s temps. in 2020 Dukes and Glanvilles were well out by late-April, the Glanville larvae have only just all wandered off to pupate this year, so 14-21 days away from hatching this year, depending on temps also.

I'd forgotten about the Glanvilles, MrSp0ck. Hopefully this continued cool weather will not affect them too detrimentally.
