Heyshott

Today I went to Heyshott to see my first Dukes of the year and then stopped off at Mill Hill on the way back for roosting butterflies.

Re: Katrina

I think they are Whooper swans. I looked online and the shaped the yellow on the beaks looks more like Whooper than Bewick's. The Barons Haugh website says 16 species of butterflies have been seen there including "the locally abundant orange-tip" so I might come back in Spring / summer.

Re: Katrina

Yesterday I went with my mother and sister to Baron's Haugh. The highlight was seeing an otter which my sister spotted. It was so quick I only managed a photo of its tail.

Re: Unusual choice of perch Costa Rica 2011

I can't really remember the food there but I suspect they fed me chicken too! Thank Neil, I was grateful for the zoom on the camera. As regards to live or dead chickens I don't know as I didn't see the actual feeding. Looking at the times on the photos the butterfly stayed perched there for over 3 m...

Unusual choice of perch Costa Rica 2011

Bugboy's photos reminded me of a holiday I had in Costa Rica in 2011. On our tour we stopped on a bridge to see some crocodiles below. We we told that they were wild but were fed chickens by the local people as then the crocodiles stayed and the tourists stopped giving the locals an opportunity to s...

Godwits Galore

Today I finally made it to a work party at Heyshott. The weather was good and there was even a bit of warmth in the sunshine. There is something about Heyshott that is always peaceful - even with the chainsaws. I then went on to Pulborough Brooks and saw a large flock of Black-tailed godwits. Someon...

Re: Katrina

This morning I went up to the Downs and unfortuantely an extensive black cloud arrived just before me. I was pleased to find a single butterfly - common blue I think with a bit of wing missing. I then went briefly to the Heathland area at Pulborough Brooks where I saw three dragonflies on the sandy ...

Re: Katrina

I spent an hour in the sun at Chantry Hill today. Plenty of butterflies on the wing. Thanks to a couple who pointed out the first Clouded Yellow for me of the year. Some nice Small Heaths about.
