Re: William

Thanks guys, hope I'm in the right place at the right time again with Brown Hairstreaks this summer :) . I managed to find another Red Admiral today (this time in native Somerset), flying in the weak sunshine, may this be the start of a long run of luck!

Re: William

Thanks for all the kind comments guys, much appreciated! I can't really take any credit for the White-Letter eggs as they were in a friend's garden where he had already found them - I'm not complaining, though some of the fun of tracking them down is lost! Bugboy - don't lose the faith, egg-hunting ...

Re: William

Thanks for the kind comments guys, as ever, much appreciated. Egg Hunting With sunny winter days and no butterflies to search for on them, I always go for the next best thing, their eggs. Where I am there are strong populations of Brown and Purple Hairstreak (though you wouldn't know it from the num...

Re: Marsh Fritillary - Favourite of 2014

Marsh Fritillary - Favourite Photo Marsh Fritillaries are a real favourite of mine so it was with interest that I ventured out to a spot near my home where some had been released by an unknown individual a couple of years ago, they're doing very well now (I saw around 50) but on the other hand this...

Re: Inter-species pairings

I seem to be fated with finding these oddities :) ! I had a general mosey around looking at hybrids and things, Polonus, Darwin's/Alpine Heath, Southern/Spanish Festoon Eastern Pale Clouded Yellow/Clouded Yellow Though these are hybrids between closely related species rather than dramatic mixed pair...

2) A Pale Clouded Yellow With the recent spates of late summer Clouded Yellow sightings I am always surprised that one of these hasn't turned up yet, when going through the 'literature' they pop up quite a lot - look forward to seeing the inevitable photos  As for me, I think more Marsh Friti...

William's images always impress me. They are so much more than just photographs of butterflies; they capture the entire essence of summer. BWs, Neil Thanks Neil, that's a huge compliment and much appreciated, it's not a patch on that pair of Dukes  , the same amount I saw in the whole of 2014...

Thanks Wurzel and Kev, your kind comments are much appreciated! Recent Doings The butterfly season is definitely winding down now, and during the past week or so the only species I have seen have been Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell. Nevertheless, the Small Copper Larvae that have resulted from ...

Thanks for the kind comments guys, it's always a real buzz when someone appreciates my photos! Autumn Joy It's been a fairly uneventful Autumn season so far this year, what with returning to the grindstone and the shorter, cooler days, but nevertheless, there's been plenty going on in the garden. Th...

Catching Up What with one thing and another I haven't posted any photos for a while, but a few here from a fairly successful late August and September. Highlight was getting regular views of Brown Hairstreaks at a Master Tree I discovered near my home (even if they were 15m above my head at a highl...

Butterfly egg Structure

Hi all, I was recently doing a bit of research into butterfly life cycles and so on, and realised I knew very little about that first stage, the egg, just wondered if anyone knew any more about the structure and the reason for their diversity and colouring - any ideas would be appreciated! Many Than...

I think if I found one of the silvery-white forms it would be too much and I'd drop down dead with shock! One of my local Small Copper colonies sees similar numbers of butterflies, and I found a pale form approaching ab. Culprinus - it could happen  - superb photos of radiata! BWs, William
