Re: Blogs

I don't think it's very useful to be honest. It means you have to look through lots of different places on the site if you want to find anything out. Definately best if people post interesting sightings, experiences etc on the forum in my opinion. If anyone wants to tell us how their breeding projec...

Re: Have a look at this.

I regret to inform you that you're all wrong... spring in fact begins when you first see a butterfly that didn't hibernate as an adult - last year's mouldy oldies don't count. Sorry about that, but it just needed clearing up. Spring for me started on 1st April 2009, 3rd April 2008, 1st April 2007 an...

Thanks to all those who entered and voted and well done to Gary for the winning entry! One of my favourites was Guy's evening flight image, good stuff.

Did anyone try my quiz? Bonus points available for all 18 correct 8)

Re: Abberant Ringlets

I have never found a particularly abberant Ringlet unfortunately, but here is a link for regarding Ringlet distribution Paul. It shows records from 2005 at Hutton Roof but not directly over Lancelot Clarke Storth. What a cool name! http://data.nbn.org.uk/interactive/map.jsp?srchSp=NHMSYS0000501120 A...

Re: Hello from a newcomer

Hi Paul, marsh fritillaries or not, you should go to Castlemartin, it's a highly inspiring place. I haven't been in season for this species, although I seem to remember that there was an unusual population explosion there a few years ago - I imagine numbers are more ordinary there now. Access in ran...

Re: First DSLR?

If you look hard enough, you may even get the camera body cheap. I found one here: http://greatdigitalart.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=382 for Canon 400D body £80 Mate, there's no such thing as a free lunch (unless you're dealing with Sussex BC it seems!). Everyone would like...

Re: u/v photography

Some info for you here Jack: http://www.naturfotograf.com/UV_IR_rev00.html#top_page According to the above website, it is possible to remove the coatings from certain lenses to increase transmission (over the longer UV wavelengths only) and thus avoid buying quartz lenses. It all looks pretty fun to...

I've re-entered the ones I submitted. The ones that didn't get added before were the ones that I didn't include a rating for.

Didn't the Swallowtail die out there and all of the reintroductions fail though?

Re: Maps Update

Excellent updates, thanks Pete. Nice to have the option to show all of the locations at once too. Is there going to be an effort to add in additional locations at all? I appreciate that it's lots of work for 'the team' to verify members' recommendations regarding public access etc, but I think it wo...

Moth ID - Cumbrian Bog

Moths arn't my strong point and I'm struggling to identify this large day-flying moth. Any help appreciated :D 9th July 2009, raised bog nr pine woods, Cumbria. Approx 2" long, strong flight. Unfortunately the shadow obscures the vein where it distinctly doubles back on itself. Biggish moth sm....

Re: October 2009 Sightings

I think Jack, given the rarity of QoS immigrants, that this brood probably were all from one female. Here's a study into inbreeding in the Glanville Fritillary in Finland: http://www.sekj.org/PDF/anzf40/anzf40-483.pdf They found that the effects of inbreeding were most pronounced after the second ge...

Re: October 2009 Sightings

You most probably did Felix... you came along and saw me sprawled out ruining my blue shirt I think...at least if that was you? It's odd how people are never quite how you imagine them to be given their posts online - it's easy to build up a mental picture of them which is highly inaccurate!
