Re: Leaning photos, why?
Hi Shirley, Have you checked in the viewfinder to make sure that there is not a problem with the liveview?...you can always rotate these ones slightly in photoshop :) Is the bracket through which your camera attaches to your monopod straight? If not it would feel odd holding the camera in the correc...

Re: Wood white near Bristol/Bath anyone?
Hi eccles,
I'm not familiar with the area, but a look at UKB and the NBN suggest that Asham Wood near to Frome might be worth a look:

Re: April 2009 Lepidoptera Sightings
A walk this morning through my local woods at Arundel (mainly cloudy conditions) revealed: Speckled Wood ( 2 ), Pearl-bordered Fritillary ( 3 ) and Speckled Yellow ( 1 ). Good displays of Bluebells and Cowslips too. Alexander pbf1sm.JPG pbf2sm.JPG pbf3sm.JPG PBFs in various parts of Rewell Wood cows...

That is rather an odd looking group you've made there Charles! Have you cleared up any of the rubbish you have photographed?

How about something a little more difficult such as "butterflies and their foodplants" -- this is the way they are often illustrated in books and would be fun I reckon.

Hi Jack, I too have been looking at elms recently. Here are some Sussex locations I have noted which might be worth anyone having a look at when the time is right for WLH. Arundel (by the water at Swanbourne Lake): TQ017079 Falmer: a few trees overhanging the footpath: TQ348080 + another at TQ346079...

Hmm it's looking good for the most part, but not everybody's posts are displayed in the small format. Not sure how to deal with that, any ideas Pete?

Re: April 2009 Lepidoptera Sightings
Went up to Arundel to Neil Hulme's excellent exhibition today (if you can, then go tommorow!) followed by a walk around Arundel Park. Six species spotted including Grizzled Skippers (TQ107081) and a colony which I have not seen records for before (TQ008109). Total: Orange-tip (all male) ( 5 ), Brims...

Re: Posts per page
Hi Pete, yes that is useful.
Perhaps we could work out a way of using the very nice gallery feature this website has in the sightings pages. A lot of thumbnails on the page would look neater than what we have currently, and would be quick to load.

Re: April 2009 Lepidoptera Sightings
Had a lovely time walking through Ford and Binsted Wood today in West Sussex, at one point there were five species on one blackthorn bush! (SU992057). Butterfly total: 7 species: Orange-tip (inc 2 females) ( 15 ), Green-veined White ( 5 ), Brimstone (all male) ( 6 ), Speckled Wood ( 4 ), Peacock ( 1...

Re: GPS/Grid Ref conversion - How???
Hi
I typed: N52degrees 10.6422' W0degrees 9.2981'
into: http://www.nearby.org.uk/
and got: Grid ref: TL 2625654839
(ie Waresley Wood), is that correct?

Re: First aberration of 2009?
Being pigmentary in origin, the yellows and reds on a small tortoiseshell are much more susceptible to fading than the blue areas which are structural. Comparing the red with the examples on the species page, I'd say that it too looks somewhat faded, and I would speculate that the yellow has just fa...

Is it not just faded through age? That's what I'd have thought at least.

Well that certainly sweeps my previous record of three votes away, so thankyou for voting for me and your kind comments too : ) I was really pleased this month to see such a good variety of entries, sometimes I feel we can all be a little too conventional with our photography, me included.
