Large, Orange, fast in flight, non landing...what was it?!

Sighted a butterfly today, that i just couldnt ID??????????? As per title - it was large(Approx size of a Red Admiral) light/bright orange and dark in colour, it flew fast, it just would not land at all. Several times it slowed its pace, looked like it might land, but just kept on flying. I assumed ...

Re: August 2015

This Brown Argus look like a female too? Based on the abdomen, I'd say that's a male. Cheers, - Pete Cheers for that Pete, I wasnt sure it was a female, the abdomen is pointed up in that image and there was another Brown Argus close by, who had been chasing this one, and the other butterfly had a a...

Re: August 2015

The 1st of August saw me visit 2 local sites in Kent, those being Queensdown Warren, and Darland Danks. I was hoping for SSS's at Queensdown Warren, but no such luck there. The female Chalk-hill Blues were on the wing at both sites, but numbers are low compared to last year. Other species seen were ...

Re: Cropping images, which crop to use?

I remember many years ago, when photos were made on film and prints were stuck into albums, seeing a friend's album where he had cut his prints to various different shapes and assembled them as a 'layout' on each page. Up until then, I had just stuck standard-size prints in serried rows but I was i...

Re: Cropping images, which crop to use?

Like you, I frequently crop my photos but don't follow any hard and fast 'rules' I like to crop out parts that I feel are superfluous to the 'subject' of the picture and I like to make sure that there is some 'space' around the main subject. I simply put the original up on my screen and use the 'un...

Re: Cropping images, which crop to use?

I think with the images that you have posted, its a bit difficult to mess about with radically different crops. With a single butterfly image, you can use the rule of thirds, and have the subject looking into a bit of space. But with a breeding pair it's probably best to have an even amount of spac...

Cropping images, which crop to use?

I rarely manage to keep any of my butterfly photos "complete"...by complete, i mean that the images have not been cropped at all. Cropping is subjective(like most things associated with photography!) but for most of my butterfly photos, i tend to crop them. The question is, which crop work...

Re: White-letter Hairstreaks in my Kent garden!

Im still getting good sightings of WLH's in my garden.
