Re: April 2016

Blimey! with all that incredible butterfly activity going on in Kent I'm feeling rather short-changed here in South Wales  just the solitary Small Tortoiseshell seen yesterday...it was the first of any species for the home garden this year! Bill :D They do say that Kent is the "Garden of...

Re: April 2016

No work today(rain stops play!) but for a couple of hours this afternoon, it was quite sunny/warm! in between the rain/hail that is! So whilst "garden watching" i was hoping for that Holly Blue to return to my patch of Ivy on the fence. But no, a fresh Large White flew over my fence and la...

Re: April 2016

Great picture of the water vole, that. Must have been a treat to see. Thanks for that, yes it was a treat to see these in action...Unfortunately, i returned to the same location yesterday, because it was the turn of my other Grandsons(the twins) to also join me on a "wildlife trek", but w...

Re: April 2016

Took one of my young Grandsons out today, for a 5 hour "wildlife trek". He's keen for an 8 year old! he even has one of my old Panny FZ38 cameras to use. We saw 5 species of butterfly on the day, just the 1 Brimstone, at least 2 Comma, 4 plus Peacocks, over 6 Small Tortoiseshells...and 2 s...

Re: Male Peacocks and mating/copulation question.

Good luck in your quest, Paul :) I understand that Small Tortoiseshells don't usually mate until late in the day perhaps in the evening which may account for lack of photos of a mating pair. I suspect Peacocks mate way out of sight on the ground under vegetation (nettles?) and possibly very late in...

Re: Male Peacocks and mating/copulation question.

It seems there isnt many images of Peacocks mating out there??? Are there any images on this forum of the mating/courting behaviour of the Peacock? or for that matter, any of the other hibernating species?? I cant seem to recall me having captured any photos of our hibernating species mating/in cop...

Re: March 2016

Good Friday....well, it was good for me too! Wall to wall sunshine here in Kent  which meant for good numbers of Butterflies on the wing. At least 3 of each - Brimstone, Peacock and Comma seen. Also 5 Common Lizards, 4 Adders, loads of Bees...and i heard a couple of Tawny Owls calling, deep in...

Re: March 2016

Glanville fritillary caterpillars and adders seen recently. Great image of the pair of Adders basking together, also its nice to see the melanistic (black) snake too. Ive only come across one of these "black" adders myself, whilst quite a rare sight in the UK, there are several spe...

Re: Male Peacocks and mating/copulation question.

Some of us may now look for male Peacocks later in the spring. Although finding one may prove that males live as long as females but not necessarily whether they mate more than once if the selective pressure isn't there. Apart from the wing size difference which is not always reliable anyway in my ...

Re: March 2016

3 Species today (22/3/16) those being - Comma, Peacock and a Small White, but i could only capture a pic of the Peacock! Just need the Brimstone now, for the hibernating species for 2016. This Peacock shows signs of wear! My guess is it emerged from hibernation today? it was weak in flight at first,...

Re: Male Peacocks and mating/copulation question.

When I can't find what I want on the internet I try searching in different languages and/or using scientific terms (to get scientific documents, and also because Latin names of butterflies, for example, are common to all languages). I've just searched for 'Aglais io polygyny' and was directed to - ...

Re: Male Peacocks and mating/copulation question.

Hi Paul, Interesting question. I am inclined to agree with Guy that male Peacocks probably can mate and/or copulate more than once especially considering that Peacocks are long-lived. As usual with butterfly behaviour many factors come into play. I understand that the probability of a male of many ...

Re: Male Peacocks and mating/copulation question.

For what it's worth, yes, I believe they can - but I was waiting for someone with more experience of breeding butterflies to confirm this. Guy Thanks very much for that. I assumed they could, but i wasnt sure myself. I tried searching/googling for more in-depth info on the Peacock, but couldnt real...

Male Peacocks and mating/copulation question.

I wasnt sure which section of the forum to post this???

My question is - Are male Peacocks able to mate/copulate more than once in their life time?

Thanks in advance, cheers Paul.

Re: March 2016

Extended lunch break from work today(its good being your own boss sometimes) meant my 1st butterfly photo of the season/year. A lovely Peacock was sighted on the woodland floor, basking in full sunshine. I managed a couple of shots, but it soon flew off out of sight. Location - Kent. Time was...

Re: March 2016

Red Admiral sighted today (4/3/16) at work, approx 12.30pm. Plenty of sunshine, but a stiff breeze! I also sighted my 1st Adder(snake) of 2016 yesterday (3/3/16). I was hoping to see a couple of Butterflies, whilst searching for snakes, but it was not to be!...Shows how cold February 2016 was, becau...

Re: February 2016

Peacock butterfly, seen today (29/2/16) just after 12.00pm lunchtime.
I was at work, sun was shining quite nicely. The Peacock flew up onto some roof tiles, where it basked briefly, then it flew out of sight.

Location - Kent.

Cheers Paul.
