Re: Gatekeeper - Favourite Photo of 2018

My contribution comes from the south west of France from Les Landes.
This pair was seen on the edge of a corn field and I particularly like the contrasting undersides.

Re: Marseilles and South of France 2018

Thanks David. Hi Folks, Mid November and the mild weather is hanging on by its nails here right on the south coast of France. Today, overcast with southerly winds, we had a lo of 15°C and a hi of 20° or so. This week it has been rainy but mildish, nonetheless. The only BFs that can be seen still fly...

Re: Dark Green Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2018

Strangely enough I have more chance of seeing a Dark Green Fritillary close to my parent's place in Leicester than I have in the south of France. I was back in Leicester in June this year and in Ketton Quarry they were all over the place. aglaja9 Ketton quarry 03Jul18 (2).JPG Their fast wing beat gi...

I'm happy for you for all your sightings of CY in the UK this year.
Down here I am the spoilt one and have no excuse for not posting something.
"Yellows" are prime candidates for backlit photos (see Millerd above) - here a female:

Here is a male Brown Argus from the south of France on Sticky Fleabane in mid October.
It was persistently courting a Lang's Short-tailed Blue  .
Ah ..... those romantic Mediterranean BAs.

Adults at my local site are very discrete, so no imago photos this year. During the Spring however I managed to photograph the same caterpillar when it was 3 mm long, then 10 mm, 15 mm and 18 mm. 3 mm long: betulae2 caterpillar 3mm long La Taurelle 22Apr18 (4).JPG 10 mm long: betulae3 caterpillar 1 ...

Some very nice aberrations above. My contribution is from the south of France. A mating pair from early September: bellargus19 pair mating male on right La Taurelle 02Sep18 (3).JPG Male on the right. Great photos Medard.
Out-of-the-ordinary species.
I must get there sometime.
And that hostelry sounds welcoming, Roger.

Re: Another appeal for lesser purple emperor sites

Hi Steve,
I've got 3 sites if ever you're in the Bouches du Rhone (Marseilles).
However, I can't guarantee photos.
Either they are high up in the trees or they come down and take salts by the waterside.

Re: Can anyone ID from these photos?

Hi Deborah,

Have a close look at your top photo and in particular at the relative positions of the two black spots as circled in red on my photo here.
This is the key to identifying your butterly.
