Badgerbob We also saw a White Stork that probably came from the Knepp Estate Do they breed there? Superb photo Bob. The trailing edge "split flaps" are of great interest to this retired aviator. Jack They attempted to breed there this year but failed. Part of a re-introduction scheme, so ...

Re: July 2019

I've only seen one this week around London, though weather hasn't been great since Friday. We had quite a few earlier but nothing on the scale I've been reading about.

Re: July 2019

We went to Bookham Common yesterday. Much more cloud than forecast but very warm. The first butterfly I saw as we left the train was a Purple Emperor flying in the car park + disappearing over some trees. In the early afternoon we had good views of 2 males in the traditional viewing area. We saw 16 ...

Re: June 2019

Yesterday went to Chobham Common, Surrey on a breezy but warm + sunny day. Surprisingly quiet for butterflies. Most numerous was 11 Silver-studded Blues- all fresh males. Otherwise 1 Red Admiral, 1 Small Tortoiseshell, 1 Ringlet, 4 Meadow Brown, 5 Small Heath + 4 Large Skipper. Generally few bees to...

Re: Orange tip

There's only one species of Orange Tip in the UK. Sometimes environmental conditions such as prolonged heat can result in smaller than normal butterflies emerging. Some species seem more prone to this than others.

Re: April 2019

Allan.W- your bee is totally wrong structure for any of the carder bees which are bumblebees, but is a Tawny Mining Bee, Andrena fulva- sometimes called a Lawn Bee as it makes miniature "mole hills" on well drained lawns where they have their nest chambers. Great shot of it.

Re: September 2018

Today several of us visited Wallasea Island, Essex- for me my first visit. Though primarily for birding I was hopeful for some insects. Initially didn't think it would be productive for the latter as the open landscape was subjected to a strong, blustery SW wind + total cloud cover. The cloud eventu...
