Re: Plant ID

Seed head looks like Salad Burnet - if so leaf should taste of cucumber.

Re: Wall - Favourite Photo of 2011

My annual trip to the I of W to see the Glanville and come across only 2 Wall all day. They were arguing over a small patch of grassless incline on the costal path between Shippards and Compton Chines.
Just managed to get this one shot before the dispute resumed.

Re: Wisley, etc

Hi Mike, A few things in response to your post: - the butterflies appeared to be behaving normally - flying around, mating, laying eggs, as well as feeding. Ah, “appeared” – the crucial word. But they weren’t in their normal environment in respect of: - 1) flora (in particular) and fauna assemblages...

Re: Wisley, etc

As the instigator of all this, sorry I have been a bit lax in getting back on some of the challenges you have presented to my position. I have, however, been very busy for the last three days, but will try to respond to your comments either here or by PM. So, although I only brought up conventional ...

Re: Wisley, etc

I'm also quite curious to know what constitutes a 'REAL enthusiast'. Answers on a postcard please. I imagine there are quite a few real enthusiasts at the annual AES Exhibition at Kempton Park each year but there are quite a few stalls selling set specimens and even the insect jewellery. Well Susie...

Re: Wisley, etc

Indeed. My sentiments exactly. I find it interesting how opinions differ on what is acceptable though. I find that abhorrant but find butterfly farms ok. Johnv finds butterfly farms abhorrant. We are to have photos of collected specimens on this site. I wonder how many people find collecting abhorr...

Re: Wisley, etc

Guy, Thanks for your very considered reply. butterfly farms do not begin to approach, at the level of animal exploitation, intensive chicken farms True, and I'm fully with you on that. I too am vegan (25 years and veggie for 20 before that) and, as you may have detected, look at the world, and natur...

Wisley, etc

I must say I have been debating with myself for a couple of weeks concerning this issue. Should I upset the apparently universal approval displayed on this site for “exotic” butterfly exhibitions, or not? This post is the result of reaching a conclusion. Well, where to start? Oh yes; all extremely p...

This one is from the Meon Valley, Hampshire - 03 July 2011
Not my best but all filed under location rather than species - and not much time today.
Also, is there a good program to reduce photos to 512kb? They all seem to work on other criteria.

Re: HAMPSHIRE SITES

Hi jack We live on the outskirts of Southampton in Hampshire. I'm new here also, but can offer local knowledge of the Southampton area. One good local Southampton site is Southampton Old Cemetery at the SW corner of The Common. I'm up to 27 species so far - not bad for being completely surrounded by...
