I've been watching a small brown for some time and wondering gatekeeper vs. small heath. I would love it to be the latter as it would be a first on my land although I'm nowhere near any heath land. I'm afraid my photographing skills are limited but the point I wanted to make is that there is definitely no white pupil in the eye. The other thing is that it is no bigger than a Gatekeeper. Is there a pupiless variant?

Taken today in Devon. Thought it might be a Carpet of some sort but can't really find a match.

I think I know the answer but would appreciate other views. I have four different ident books but still not 100% sure. One was taken this year and one taken last year in the same area though. My guess - 1st Small, 2nd Large. Nick (Sorry about size and quality of images - not very good with cameras!)
