Re: May 2008 Votes

May 2008 was the last competition I will enter or look at on this forum, as it seems obvious to me that the voting is about as political and rigged as the eurovision song contest, and not about which photo is the best. While I never expected personally to get votes anyway as I don't seem to stand a ...

Re: May Butterflies

If anyone is interested I uploaded my Glanville and Marsh Fritillary pics last night. http://piccies.flybywire.org.uk/ButterfliesMoths/index.html Apparently the first moth is a Green Carpet. Will need to update that. Someone suggested the Common Carpet is actually a Silver Ground Carpet but must adm...

Re: June Butterflies

I saw some butterflies in Central London today. OK I cheated. I went to the Natural History Museum in South Kensington. They have an excellent Butterfly Exhibition there. It's outside on the front lawn. You start by going through a maze that catalogues the lifecycle of a butterfly. Plenty of kiddie ...

Re: May Butterflies

Hi Mike, Congratulations on getting both in a day  . Sounds like the large amount of effort you put in earned you just rewards. Only giving you 9.5 out of 10 though - getting the ferry across, shame on you! Neil lol thanks Neil. Ahh well I was knackered as it was very humid and got u...

Re: May Butterflies

Sorry Sussex Kipper. I managed to bag both Glanville and Marsh Frits today. I just posted this report to uk-leps. I forgot to mention I also saw a male Brimstone somewhere on an A road. Can't remember where now. The report: My A plan today was to glide but I failed to get a glider in the ballot. For...

Couldn't find the tornado but that's a lovely sunset lit wave cloud. The glider pilot in me is itching to be up there!

Re: Snow April 6th 2008!

Yeah 6th April was remarkable in NW London too. I have my own snow pics from that day at http://piccies.flybywire.org.uk/Weather/index.html - 3rd row down for 3 rows. I believe the snow even stuck on the beaches on the south coast! Unsurprisingly I saw not butterflies that day. Wow amazing to see a ...

Re: May Butterflies

On 23rd May at Park Corner Heath, East Sussex the Small Pearl Bordered Fritillaries were on the wing along with plenty of Speckled Yellow moths and a single Small Heath. Was fairly cloudy so not much else. Cloudy and mild meant the SBPF's were quite docile and easy to photograph. Also got very close...

Re: May 2008 competition entries

A late change for me. On 31st May I finally saw the Marsh Fritillary at Seven Barrows in West Berkshire. Was lucky enough to get a shot of a pair courting too. All despite 8/8 thin altostratus too. The low light levels and that they were moving around and flapping a lot made this image even luckier....

Ahh you beat me by 6 minutes. :P Just saw the article before your link.

Nice shots by Peter Eeles on page. Shame the BBC's full size pics are still small thumbnails (nothing new there).

Re: April Butterflies

Yay! Warm weather at last! 25 Peacocks, 2 Holly Blues, 1 Speckled Wood, 1 Comma, 1 Suspected Female Brimstone (not 100%), and 1 Male Orange Tip at Horsenden Hill, TQ18. My first 'bonanza' of the year (considering the location is suburban). Pics at http://piccies.flybywire.org.uk/ButterfliesMoths/ind...

Peacock dangling precariously upside down from a bluebell. Despite less than perfect focus I picked this for its comedy value. http://piccies.flybywire.org.uk/ButterfliesMoths/2008/20080422/Peacock2.jpg Compare the Orange Tip - http://piccies.flybywire.org.uk/ButterfliesMoths/2008/20080422/OrangeTip...

Re: Has spring arrived?

OK who nicked spring? I saw a few Commas and just the one Peacock end of March and beginning of April. Then on Sunday 6th April it snowed!Spring shoots and leaves covered in thick white 'cotton wool'! That was surreal, especially in NW London. This week feels like winter again. I hope those spring e...

Re: February 2008 Entries -" More than one"

Oh go on then. Hesperidae wins this time. It was a hard one as I have several likely candidates, including a pair of courting silver spotted skippers and a field full of Adonis Blues. But I went for the 'sex on a finger' shot of a pair of mating Dingy Skippers in the end - avert thy eyes ;) : http:/...

Re: First Butterfly of 2008

My first butterfly of 2008 was a (90% sure - it didn't stop moving) Peacock up by the Bridgewater Monument above Aldbury on 20th January. I remember that day as being 8/8 low cloud, but rather mild. It also started raining near the end of the walk. Today I spotted an early Comma, nectaring on simila...
