Re: Must dos for 2012

I'd like to break Guy's multiple species record with 8+ butterflies to show that Annoying Czech has much higher level of annoyness than Annoying Swiss 8) Okay, I'm hoping for 100 species snapped per year, or at least 75. And to join some local convservation/counting projects, currently in "to b...

Re: Large Copper - Favourite Photo

I just re-made some August male, so I'm adding a second shot I find quite solid. I can't help myself, these guys are just so tame... Roger, I must say I like both your website and your inventive 'where the helle they are' interjection. http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/986/ohnivacekcernocarny2011.jpg

Camberwell Beauty - Favourite Photo of 2011

Probably the best thing on Camberwell Beauty is (saving the fact they're unmistakable) the possibility of making a "friendship" with separate imagos: they're very sporadic, territorial, long-living and sometimes unexplainedly tame. I think I've seen just two Beauties this year, but every ...

Re: Scotch Argus

The Central European's optimum are recently localities with a well-preserved structure of biotopes providing various levels of succession varying from "naked ground" to "almost wood". Altitude's not that relevant, but sadly, many other small but complicated things yes, eg. solita...

Re: Pyrgus.com - New Website

Haha, this is just damnably good, both website & domain and photos.

Did you make it on your own, or did you just pay a pro?

If you wander into my country one day, I might be your guide.

Peacock - Favourite Photo of 2011

As a child, I often didn't even bother to catch the Peacocks. Now, I was snapping only the newly emerged individuals. What a piggishness :) But I don't know, how much common are Peacocks in the UK and the rest of Europe, but they're pretty damn abundant here. A very aesthetic, but underrated specie...

Re: Large Copper - Favourite Photo

You really know how to wind up the Brits, don't you!! :D We drove that species to extinction by a combination of collecting and draining the fens [/u]. That said, I'm glad it's still common out east. I took part in a conservation project on the Drava way back in 1994 and found it flying there, in b...

Large Copper - Favourite Photo of 2011

I'm running up the thread of my #1 favourite species, both for its "intelligence" (adaptability, dispersability) and spirit (several males were guarding the territory by attacking me). Not to mention they're pretty gorgeous, especially the newly emerged males. But still, I've chosen a lad...

Re: Brown Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2011

I have a vague feeling the species is scarcer to see in the Central Europe than in UK. Some photographed vainly hunted those Hairstreaks for years. Anyway, he's my good old battered overgrown female. My only.. (2011-09-09) Her damage is still fascinating me :) http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/4075...

Scarce Copper - Favourite Photo of 2011

Maybe scarce in lowlands, but it's definitely Common Copper in Central European foothills and mountains, where is reasonably ever-present and tolerating various levels of succession and moisture. Unlike Small Copper and Large Copper , SC much more abundant in a very suitable biotopes (although not ...

Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2011

Being relatively new in snapping butterflies, I've met Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary only once for now - deep in the foothills valley. It was an abundant population in its 2nd brood, flying together with some Phengaris Blues . Though I'm not 100% satisfied with background and lighting, I like how...

Re: September 2011 competition

Frankly, it's because Nigel's 1 level higher than other regular competitors. I was rather surprised that somebody almost jumped him over :D (Although he wasn't my 100% fav. in August.) That Small Copper is technically far better than the rest, or am I only one who see it so? I also noticed he's usua...

Re: September 2011 competition

I just sorted the gallery by "Rating/Descending". The fairest solution, I'm sure! From what I've seen, Nigel Kiteley is certainly the best photographer here, and pretty much representing the level I'd like to achieve as soon as possible with the appropriate glass. What's worst news, he lit...

Re: Dusky Large Blue - favourite photo

I gravedigged and remade one more fresher "Duskie" (I said I have a tons of them :)). I decided to keep this one darker..

Image

I realized I have one male's forewings which is a rarity, but on a crappy photo.

Re: Dusky Large Blue - favourite photo

They never do that! You just proved 9/10 level of luck! :D (10/10 would go for a fresh, partly blue male :)) From what I've seen, they're even more "rearwings-only" and closely tied to the host plant than Scarce Large Blues ( Arions/Large Blues are quite often sunbasking with opened wings ...

Re: Dusky Large Blue - favourite photo

Well, I'm trying to start the threads only with representative photos :D And this third shot must be definitely rated as interesting and worthy, both for the flower head and the imago itself. "Duskie" with open wings means you've been either lucky or very patient (or at least you got up ve...

Dusky Large Blue - Favourite Photo of 2011

I'm starting a thread of another maybe a bit exotic species. I presume there is no reason for "2011" restriction :) http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/8522/modrasekbahenni20110803.jpg Not long ago, I've been invited to the "lepidopterologistic cottage" in southern foothills of t...

Thanks, I guess I hit the "sharpening point" very very acurately when sharpening (manually). Which never turned out well again (42 mm limit).

Anyway, I'm Marek (Mark).

Short-tailed Blue - Favourite Photo of 2011

Mr. Cupido argiades is one of my favourites, so I'll start the thread. I actually have at least three reasons to love him: • He compelled me to work with aperture, sharpening, and later better postprocessing • Availability 2-3 times per season with increasing abundances • He's subjectively one of t...
