Re: March 2018

Just saw a White butterfly in Cambridge, near Addenbrookes. Didn't know Whites would be active this early, but too pale for Brimstone. It flew along some short grass then up and over a large building into the blue sky :-)

Re: Site amendments

TL - Cavenham Heath. I've been visiting regularly for 4 years and have never seen a Grayling here, despite being there all through the flight periods and spending a lot of time searching the (publicly accessible) heath. I have no idea about the closed off areas, but if any one has a record from the ...

Re: GRAFTON WOOD, WORCESTERSHIRE.

Thanks Russ. I was in luck, I visited on 31st August and saw three individuals (all female I think) around the hedgerow on the south western side of the wood. I was fortunate to be there while a fellow enthusiast was also looking, and he was quicker at spotting them than me! I've got a couple of pho...

Re: GRAFTON WOOD, WORCESTERSHIRE.

Thanks for the info of where in the wood you were seeing the Brown Hairstreaks, always helpful to have extra detail when searching a new site. I'll be having a try one day this weekend, also trying for the Walls at Windmill Hill nearby. Any local suggestions welcome.
cheers, Leo

Re: Denmark butterflies

On my second day on Falster-southern Denmark-I went on my first butterfly walk.I found about 20 species but the highlight was the Poplar Admiral-stated in the books as extinct in Denmark. It looked very much alive to me. Hi P.J, That's great that you're in Falster, its my neck of the woods when I go...

Re: September 2011

Hello Matsukaze,

Thank you for the info. Any tips for spotting them? They are so camouflaged maybe that's why I'm missing them. I heard they like to perch on rocks? Any particular time of day?

thanks, Leo

Type of blue?

Hello, I am very confused about this photo. Although its obviously blurred, I can't work out why it seems to have orange spots on the upper wing but deep blue and black marks too? Is this jut because it was flying off or have I missed something obvious?! Maybe its the light showing through the wing?...

Re: September 2011

On the 1st Sep I was lucky enough to see my first Clouded Yellow, at the July Course section of Devil's Dyke in Cambs. No photo sadly, too much adrenaline to get a shot before it flew off. On the 3rd I was at Aston Rowant in the Chilterns and saw my first Silver Spotted Skippers, and also first Pain...

Grangelands - Bucks - Dob & sB

Hello, Off to the Beautiful area of the north Chilterns tomorrow and dropping in at Grangelands to see if there's any second generation Duke of Burgundys and Small Blues there. Its my firs time there - does anyone have local knowledge of the reserve to point me in the right area for these butterflie...

Re: Silver-studded Blues

Hello,

I went to Westleton Heath near Dunwich in Suffolk on Saturday June 18th and saw a couple of Silver-studded blues, a male and a female. There should be more as its a good site but weather wasn't ideal. Beautiful butterflies :)

Re: Swallowtails 2011

Hello,

I am planning a trip to the Broads for the Swallowtail the weekend of the 18th June. As everything seems early this year, does anyone think this date is a little late and I should get there this weekend?

many thanks!

Re: Tottenhoe

Many thanks for the info guys! Will bear in mind if I make a visit soon.

Does any one else have this trouble of trying to fit in so much in just the weekends?! I am looking to get into reserve management / conversation so I can be in nature all the time!

many thanks, Leo

Tottenhoe

Hello, Has anyone been to Tottenhoe recently and seen a small blue? Just wondering if they will be around for much longer, or will I have to wait until the second brood in late July. Also with the very early spring we've had, does anyone think the Duke of Burgundy might have a second brood there? Ma...

Re: Surrey - best reserves

So I visited Denbies Hillside on Saturday 4th June, between 13:00 and 3:30pm roughly, but wasn't lucky enough to see an Adonis Blue. I spent a lot of time watching the grass on the hillside but just didn't see anything blue! Was I doing anything wrong? It was quite windy and the sun was really hot, ...

Re: Surrey - best reserves

Hello Gibster, Thank you so much for your help and info. This sounds great - and just the kind of local knowledge I was after. Many thanks for your offer to show me around, if I'm ever in the area on a weekday I will ask if you are around. Right now to plan the route! Thanks Roger - good to know the...

Re: Surrey - best reserves

thank you both for the replies. I am sad to have missed the DoB but something to aim for next year. But glad to hear the Silver Studded Blue is coming out, so Chobham Common would be a good bet. I excitedly read about the Large Blue last night, but I think Collard Hill is just a little too far. Othe...

Re: Surrey - best reserves

Hello Pete, many thanks for the reply. And yes I've been getting worried I've timed this all wrong, but I was unable to do the last two weekends so have to try this - my main goal and reason for the Salisbury sites is the PBF and DoB, which I know I am pushing as its late - and if they emerged early...

Surrey - best reserves

Hello, i am on a trip this weekend to Bentley Wood and Blackmoor Copse near Salisbury to hopefully see some of the rarer species not common where I live (Cambs). I'm staying in Basingstoke on Saturday night so all of Sunday is dedicated to Wiltshire. On route I want to go through Surrey so I wondere...

Re: Advice on best plants to search out

Hello Rich. Many thanks for the reply. I will do some research on those plants you mentioned so I know when I spot them in the wild (unfortunately I don't have a garden at the moment). I live in St Ives in Cambs but this year I am planning to travel as far afield as I can over a weekend to try and n...
