Re: Book Offer - 3rd Ed Field Guide to the Moths of GB & Ireland

As usual with new editions there is the question of if it is worth upgrading and what are the new additions.
Would welcome input from those who have compared the 2nd and 3rd editions.

Many thanks

Purple Emperor at Chambers Farm Wood (Lincs) today. Some were introduced last year. Don't know if these are their offspring or another batch dropped off!

Re: New Book - In Pursuit of Butterflies

Agree - it's a fantastic book.

Apparently Matthew was on Springwatch Unsprung. Does anyone know the date it was on or has a link to it please?

Thanks

Re: Close focus binoculars

Bought a pair of 6.5x21 yesterday. Despite the poor light and obviously lack of butterflies I am very impressed with them.

Thanks to all who posted with advice, comments and suggestions.

Re: Close focus binoculars

Many thanks for the replies and suggestions. They are most helpful. I do a lot of photography. My birding bins focusto under 5 ft. I use a loupe sometimes for hoverfly ID. These bins seem a good addition to my armoury not only in ID but also just to sit and enjoy watching. As always I will try and c...

Re: Close focus binoculars

A really interesting thread. I am seriously thinking of getting a pair. I have decent birding bins so these would be just for butterflies, dragonflies and hovers. Some reviews suggest that 6.5 are best for this purpose - what do others think? Also any other comments would be most welcome. Thanks Hugh

Re: LED magnifying glass?

I don't have LED lens but find I can see well enough without. I have a couple of cheap magnifying glasses which help with general inspection. For better views I use opticron loupes 10x and 20x The 10x is the most useful but in some circumstances I need the 20x. I use all the above for moths, hoverfl...

Re: Questions about LUMIX FZ200

Like many others I am finding this a fascinating thread. As a lifelong SLR user I am amazed at how advanced bridge cameras have become. On another thread I said my canon 100 macro had broken and was going to be expensive to fix. I am in the position of considering if to buy a new one as I have enjoy...

Re: Macro lens suggestion please

Thanks all. Am still a bit sore at the idea of a rip off! If a repair entailed £120 worth of work then ok but if it doesn't then it seems like a rip off. Someone at the camera club might look at it or know a local repairer. Just want to know how bad it is. In the meantime am using my birding lenses....

Re: Macro lens suggestion please

Thanks both. Yes have cleaned contacts. My real beef is not knowing if it is completely knackered or not. Take a car to the garage and they can give you a rough idea. Take a lens to a shop and no idea! Will have a ponder for awhile. Bit fed up with it all especially in the middle of the butterfy/dra...

Re: Macro lens suggestion please

Thanks Mike. Yes I loved the lens. The problem is to do with the electrics. The error sign comes up. Have cleaned the contacts to no avail. The camera shop had no idea of the problem. If only it was AF as I usually only use manual for macro. The dilemma is knowing if it is a big job to repair. A fri...

Macro lens suggestion please

My canon 100 mm macro non IS packed up for no reason. Have had it for about 4 years and was pleased with it. However the local branch of LCE say its £25 to send it then a minimum of £120 plus parts to repair. Hardly seems worthwhile for a £400 lens. I know that some of you use other models so sugges...
