the painted lady invasion of last year probably made it appear butterflys were very numerous, must say i have probably only seen a dozen ladies this year and very few red admirals/ orange tips up here in cheshire/shropshire. but other species especially small coppers/ brimstones in very high numbers...

thanks very much to the judges :) glad you liked the image so much :) i did take the shot with a 100mm canon macro lens, natural light, [no flash on this image ] iso 400, f7.1 handheld anyone wishing to shoot them needs to visit there site regularly, as they all seem to emerge in a very short time, ...

In my few meagre attempts at this I seem to find the butterfly gets larger as you change the focus point which so far upsets the stacker, tho' I think I've unwittingly got a pirate ie c**p version. what am I doing wrong???? thanks for comments yes i only shoot handheld, it just takes practise to brace camera in different shooting positions, ie resting left elbow on knee to hold steady. i use zerene stacker program which is currently the best focus stacking program available, there is a free program called czp which is ...

you might be able to get a second hand dslr body quite cheap , alot of camera shops part ex canon and nikon bodies. might even find a macro lens if lucky :)
even 4 year dslr will blow away a compacts image quality. long term a good investment.
