Underside shot from Fermyn on July 21st. The other was one of a few heavily-marked females at Bedford Purlieus on July 24th.

Re: Anteros formosus (Riodinidae)

I can't offer anything quite as beautiful as the species in Tony's original post - but I did complete a minor quest of my own when I caught up with the Little Metalmark Calephelis virginiensis at Fakahatchee Strand on the western edge of the Everglades last november. Fakahatchee is famous for its Gh...

Nowt to say - just a shot I took whilst enjoying the first Chalkhills to emerge at Barnack Hills 'n Holes in late July.

Re: Painted Lady - Favourite Photo 2016

These appeared in my garden on May 5th - somewhat earlier that usual - and persisted all the way through to late September.

This rather distant shot from the white 'valerian' in my front garden on the day I first spotted them.

Re: Peacock - Favourite Photo 2016

Not a great shot, but one taken in a privately-owned meadow about 300 yards from my home to which I've now been granted access. This summer I surveyed the some of the fauna for the owner, and found previously unrecorded colonies of Small Heath and Brown Argus, amongst the more common species for Not...

Re: Purple Emperor - Favourite Photo 2016

From the Lady Wood part of the Fermyn complex on the 21st of July. Usual grounded-type shot plus one in a tree. I gotta say I don't like the 'scrum' that occurs during PE season at Fermyn. Gimme a walk where I see one-man-and-his-dog any day of the week. That said I did contribute to the overcrowdin...

Re: Purple Hairstreak - Favourite Photo 2016

 Apologies for the lateness of post... Christmas and all that... Again, I'm resorting to posting pics taken in France. This rather battered individual descended each morning to the gravel driveway of the gîte where I was staying in Dordogne in mid-September. Purple Hairstreak (Neozephyrus quer...

Re: Marsh Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2016

Regular readers may recall (from what I just said on the Lulworth thread) my mission to see every one of the 'British' species during a single visit to a single site in France in late May. Well here's a Marsh Fritillary from that particular excursion. (Yeah, I know this is mainly copypasta fr...

Here's a shot from Empingham - which some of you may be familiar with, as it is one of the villages adjacent to Rutland Water (where they have the annual Birdfair-thingy-whateverit'scalled). Anyhoo, some fellow on Flickr went to great pains to point out that it's the aberrant form ab. zobeli which I...

This one from Risby Common, near Scunthorpe on a trip to see Grayling. Nowt much to say about it except I like the way the legs and proboscis mirror the pink stamens on the Viper's Bugloss.

I feel rather embarrassed returning to the standard 'butterfly on a stick' photo after such excellent contributions from millerd and bugboy, but that's all I got. This one from late July in my home village in Notts.

Re: Holly Blue - Favourite Photo of 2016

No luck with open-wing shots for me this year. One observation I would make is that a sure-fire way to get one of these usually very 'flighty' critters to stay still for a while is to dump a load of pond weed in a garden humper. The can't resist coming down for a bit of a furtle and a crafty drink. ...

Re: Green-veined White - Favourite Photo of 2016

I took this snap using all the wrong settings on my camera. I was in my garden taking 'long shots' of groups of flowers and had forgotten to adjust - as such there seems something not quite right about it to my eye. Still, it's a bright and colourful background which contrasts well with the white su...

Re: Green Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2016

I know a few people who went to the usually reliable site at Charnwood Forest in Leicestershire and came away without seeing a single critter - but they were there - and in similar numbers to previous years. They had simply relocated - to the bilberry bushes about 200 metres away from the 'normal' o...

Re: Duke of Burgundy - Favourite Photo of 2016

Some corkers on here already - congrats to all. I've worked out (it's cheating I know) that it's easier for me to have a week's holiday in France than it is to go on countless 200-300 mile round-trips to see some of the UKs rarer butterflies actually in the U.K. So here's a couple of Dukes snapped i...
