Re: Black Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2011

I never seem to have much luck with hairstreaks... but it's probably my own lack of patience. Despite numerous outings I didn't set eyes on a single brown hairstreak this year... and the only views I had of their purple cousins were distant ones. Y'know the kind I mean... where they are wheeling and...

Re: Adonis Blue - Favourite Photo of 2011

It's a long drive from Nottingham to get to see adonis blues - so it's not every year that I get a chance... but I did manage to squeeze in a trip to see this year's second brood at Denbies. This was on Sunday 14th August, only about six weeks ago... but it seems like a lot longer for some reason......

Re: your favourite photo

That all seems like a great idea Pete. :D At the moment I can't access the 'General' topic in the Species section sub-fora either... though I assume this is just part of the teething troubles that also seem to have duplicated the three species-specific threads I made... and rendered viewing and post...

Re: your favourite photo

Alrightee then... shall we give the separate species threads a go? I propose... A separate thread for your favourite photo(s) of 2011 for each of the 58 UK species. Three new threads per week (as suggested by dilettante) to space it out through the winter season. Placed in the Species Forum (as sugg...

Re: your favourite photo

 I have an idea! Since this thread has been so well-liked and supported (thanks for starting it ChrisC! :D ) - and everyone likes to post their photographs - perhaps we could make more along similar lines? How about 58 new threads - ONE FOR EACH BRITISH SPECIES - where members could pos...

Re: your favourite photo

There really are some great photos on this thread... I've thoroughly enjoyed looking at them all. I also think it's interesting that many of people's personal favourites are not the standard 'butterfly on a stick' bokeh -macro-blurry-background kind-of-thing which is what we're told we should be aim...

Re: Any ideas for Boston USA?

Hi Paul, Follow this link to the Massachusetts Butterfly Club: http://www.naba.org/chapters/nabambc/ I was planning a trip to New England earlier this year (which sadly never transpired) so I contacted Sharon Stichter through that site and got hold of their excellent publication 'The Massachusetts B...

Re: Chalkhill/Adonis female IDs

No apologies required Lee - my lack of success in snapping a genuine adonis female gives me the perfect excuse for another excursion. 8) I've thoroughly enjoyed reading all the contributions on the thread - and learned a lot too - thanks to all , celery :) ...and I did see plenty of other good stuff...

Thanks for all your replies so far... :D

Just in case it helps clarify the issue, here's a (very blurry) underside shot of the individual in the picture labelled #9

Chalkhill/Adonis female IDs

As I mentioned in Susie 's Denbies thread I went there for the first time last Sunday (14th August). Lovely place... masses of critters. Anyhoo, being a resident of the Northern half of England it's rare that I get a chance to see chalkhill blues and an even rarer treat to see adonis. Consquently (a...

Re: Denbies Hillside - Saturday 6 August

dilettante - Last Sunday was my first trip also... so hopefully these 'newcomer' instructions might help. After leaving the Denbies Hillside carpark (don't get confused with the Ranmore Common car park 1 mile up the road, like I did  ) enter through the wooden gate - and with the glorious view...

Re: Denbies Hillside - Saturday 6 August

It really does look like you all had a smashin' time, and there's some fabulous pictures on this thread too... :) ...but want I want to know is... did anyone get a shot of a female adonis blue? And if so, perhaps they could post it on this thread. Perhaps they hadn't yet emerged when you went? Perha...

Re: celery

Sunday 7th August - Saltfleetby (Rimac), North Lincolnshire coast. I made two visits to this delightful site - either side of a fish and chip dinner, a game of crazy golf and a 99 on the seafront at Skegness. The weather was fine and sunny - with an occasionally stiff breeze - the kind you always ge...

Re: celery

There's a definite time-lag developing in this reportage... kinda like you used to get when you were abroad and searching for an English newspaper to see the football results, whilst summer-holidaying in Crete in the 1980s. Then you'd get upset because Rotherham had lost 2-1 at home to Mansfield Tow...

Bernwood Forest and Meadows - Saturday 30th July. Late afternoon. Hoping to happen upon a lazy brown hairstreak... but no such luck. I did find the purple hairstreaks buzzing around the treetops... but I lack the patience for the proper 'stake-out' required to get the close-quarter snaps. http://far...

Aston Rowant - Saturday 30th July. Early afternoon. Not a lot to add as the site has been well documented lately in the excellent and informative posts of millerd , nfreem , MikeOxon , David M , Lawts , EricY , essexbuzzard and Lee Hurrell (sorry if I missed anyone out)... so I'll skip straight to t...
