The latest newsletter from the East Midlands branch of Butterfly Conservation features a picture of a dark green fritillary on the back cover. The caption says that it was taken in Cotgrave Forest in south Nottinghamshire, which is about three miles from where I live - though it doesn't say when it ...
I can't seem to get a decent shot of a dingy no matter how many times I encounter them - and I encountered them a lot this year, on at least six different sites in the East Midlands, despite it being one of our scarcest resident species. When I see them they're invariably scuffing around in the shor...
This little chap was an unexpected treat for me on a cold, gusty, dark and dismal 15th of May. After all that fabulous early Spring weather we'd been having, things had turned decidedly miserable in the midlands - so I gave up on butterflies and went in search of the colony of green-winged orchids a...

Very surprised to see a single small copper during a lengthy walk in the Trent valley on Sunday. In the margins of an agricultural field between the Nottinghamshire villages of Fiskerton and Morton. In decent condition too.
No pictures yet! ...and nothing to offer from me either I'm afraid. Come on folks... we must have some Scottish members on here... surely not everyone comes from the Home Counties  Rosalyn.. please figure out how to post a picture pronto - you could be this thread's hero and saviour......
I think we all seem to take the comma a little for granted these days. We see a flash of orange when looking for a fritillary and complain that 'it's just another comma'. Yet it's only really in the last decade that this beautiful species has become commonplace at the northern tip of the East Midlan...

Here's a male and female chalkhill blue sharing the same scabious flower. Taken at one of the northerly outposts for the species at Barnack Hills & Holes NNR near Stamford, on a very windy and overcast 23rd of July. My partner, Tara, is just out of shot holding the stem of the flower so it wasn'...
It must have been a good year for brown argus - they seemed to pop almost every place I went. Here in Nottinghamshire they seemed to outnumber common blues on a lot of sites where they are usually much the scarcer species. Two pictures both with a similar composition. They differ in terms of the ind...
