Re: British Life List

Thanks for the replies. Yes I missed the boat with Scarce Tortoiseshell. I was conscious it was happening at the time, but didn't react. I've probably over estimated the possibility of another influx. No bother though. Like I say, I want my butterflies to be a leisurely pursuit. I prefer that pace. ...

Re: British Life List

Thanks Pete. Cryptic Wood White definitely won't be this year. I've already been over to Ireland this year for the Egyptian Vulture, (which I missed) and will be going over again later this summer, (hopefully) if the Least Tern returns.

Lulworth Skipper on the other hand.....

British Life List

I've just been looking at my potential targets as I hope to retire in the next couple of years. It's a slow burn for me in terms of ticking off the British butterflies. I've seen 57 of the regulars but still need Lulworth Skipper and Cryptic Wood White, (acknowledging the latter is located in Irelan...

Re: Cumbria butterflies query

Hi Stevie. I have seen Mountain Ringlet and Northern Brown Argus at the same time (June), Mountain Ringlet at Irton Fell and NBA at a number of sites including Latterbarrow, Gait Barrows and Arnside Knott. You can also see Large Heath at Meathop Moss or Foulshaw Moss at this time and Small Pearl-bo...

The British and Irish List

Other than the regular 59 species, (including Cryptic Wood White) would there be any others you'd add to the below list as potentials that have been/could be seen in Britain/Ireland in recent times and in the near future? Scarce Tortoiseshell Large Tortoiseshell Monarch Long-tailed Blue Camberwell B...

Re: Bishop Middleham Quarry

Thanks for the info. I think I'll play safe this year and make the trip to St. Abbs.

Bishop Middleham Quarry

Does anyone know if the Brown Argus has reached this site yet, (last year), or are they still just Northern Brown Argus?
Thanks.

Re: Essex or Small Skipper?

It was taken along the coast road at Cley-next-the-sea which is a location that gets Essex. I'm happy it was an Essex, but it was the angle of the sex brand that was throwing me. However, if it's not the sex brand, it makes sense.

Essex or Small Skipper?

Is this Essex Skipper. I'd always assumed so based on the completely black tip to the antenna.
However, the sex brand is definitely not parallel to the wing.
Again it's a photo of a photo, so apologies for that.
Thanks for any help.

Brown Argus or Common Blue?

Always thought this was Brown Argus; prominent black spot on each wing, long male type abdomen. However, a fair bit of blue sheen to the wings. Not sure if that's the light/camera playing tricks. It was regularly returning to completely barren dry soil. Not the best photo as it's a photo of a photo....

Re: The British List

So there's nothing that confirms how many of the rarer species we've ever had?

The British List

Is there a definitive reference that details all of the British species ever recorded, and their occurrence numbers, (for the rarer species) similar to what the BBRC produce for birds?
