Re: Grizzled Skipper RFI

I too would appreciate any info. re connecting with GS. I have some sites - East Midlands/Norfolk but would love to know if they are flying yet - Ketton Quarries, Foulden. I'd keep popping in, but it's a long drive to find I'm too early. This weather is playing tricks on me. I keep feeling I need to...

Re: April 2011

Tried Ketton Quarries today - great habitat. I had two fleeting glimpses of what was most likely a Grizzled Skipper - the first the typical zigzag and then I disappear flight. I guess it's still early, despite my burnt head! Would appreciate any updates from members as numbers of GS grow at this sit...

Re: April 2011

...speaking of snakes... I went To Ketton Quarry in Rutland last Saturday (9th April) in search of those purported early-emerging East Midlands Green Hairstreaks (none), Grizzled Skippers (nope), Dingy Skippers (zip!)... but I still had a great time... and saw this male Adder scudding amongst the u...

Re: Steve's 2011 Calendar

No I don't know anything new. I meant Adonis on that same trip somewhere in the south. Having had feedback from various sources the best approach seems to be to divorce Duke and Grizzled from the later Spring butterflies. I'll tackle those two separately, and then look to get both blues and Marsh Fr...

Re: Steve's 2011 Calendar

Thanks for the comments. I was mindful that things might be a week or so earlier given the weather we've had.

Steve's 2011 Calendar

Does this sound like a plan? I've got fifteen species to see in Britain and am trying to see 10/11 this year, leaving just 4/5 next year. Taking petrol costs into account etc. plus weekends (has to be weekends) when I am available, (holiday abroad late May), I was thinking of the following. I'd appr...

Re: Planning For Spring

Thanks all for the info. Gibster, my targets for next year: Grizzled Skipper, Duke, Small Blue, Adonis Blue, Marh Frit, and Wood White - all in a two day Spring jaunt down south - last week in May. If I can get half my 2011 targets in two days it would give me such a boost for the rest of the year. ...

Planning For Spring

I'm already planning for 2011. The plan is to get 11 of the 15 I need next year and the remaining 4 in 2012. I think I can get 6 of next year's 11 in a two day trip in May. I'd appreciate any suggestions re optimum dates and sites. Plan A: Northamptonshire down to Surrey Day 1 - start at Salcey Wood...

Re: August Sighting 2010

Can anyone confirm any recent sightings of Silver-spotted Skipper at Aston Rowant - was aiming to go down tomorrow for Adonis Blue and S-sS. However, if the latter has stopped flying, I may wait until next Spring for AB.

Thanks in anticipation.

Adonis Blue

Travelling down from the north, what is the most northerly site that is reliable for Adonis Blue. I'm wanting to make a smash and grab raid this weekend.

Thanks.

Re: Scotch Argus

Thanks Vince.

The upperwing looked like the one in your shot. It was just the worn underwing that surprised me.

Scotch Argus

This was my first Scotch Argus, seen at Arnside Knott yesterday. I was underwhelmed with a butterfly I was looking forward to seeing. I was particularly surprised by the uniform underwing, with just a faint suggestion of the patterning I was hoping to see. Is it simply a warn individual accounting f...

Re: Brown Argus - Upperwing Spots

Here is a different butterfly - same location, same day. The fading out of the orange suggests this is a more typical Northern Brown, (Castle Eden). There were also some classic white-spotted individuals as well.

Re: Brown Argus - Upperwing Spots

This was the original butterfly in question. This was seen at Bishop Middleham, County Durham. I've treated as Northern Brown Argus, (Castle Eden). However note how strong the orange is on the upperwing all the way to the top. Does anyone believe this to be a Brown Argus? Interesting position for th...

Penhale Dunes

I was curious to see if I would score with this species at Penhale Cornwall whilst on holiday. The site is excellent for butterflies, but most August holidays fall too late to catch up with Silver-studded. However, for anyone going, the best place to search is close to the boundary of the MOD site, ...

Re: Brown Argus - Upperwing Spots

Sorry for late reply - been on holiday. No. Bishop Middleham is some distance from the range of Brown, and all butt's. at this site are regarded as Northern.

Re: Brown Argus - Upperwing Spots

Interesting Dave that the orange on the upperwing also fades out towards the top and isn't striking. I've got shots of Northern Brown from Bishop Middleham earlier this year with less white on the two spots, and much more striking orange.

Should be fun if/when these two ever overlap.
