Re: Not Lepidoptera ( birds) 4
In Mull it appeared that the otter was looking for something to steal from the eagles. A bit dangerous I would think.

Re: Not Lepidoptera ( birds) 4
Ah I can see them now. Fantastic shots of a superb bird.
I remember seeing two juveniles on a tiny island in the centre of a loch in Mull when an otter turned up and ran around them. Both birds swivelled round watching the otter. Very amusing.

Yeah Seth, butterflies, those things with pretty wings and stuff.

Re: Paul Wetton
Hi Goldie It's not too hard to find and there's a sign at the side of the road where the car park is. If you go, just head uphill from the car park through the woods to the break in the trees under the power lines. That's where you'll find the Chequered Skippers and Small Pearl-bordered Frits. Take ...

Hi Roger Pine Marten. Fantastic. Saw one and captured some video at the Speyside Wildlife Hide up near Aviemore a few years ago. I went back the following year but had no luck. Hi Goldie M Glasdrum Wood is on the west coast of Scotland between Oban and Fort William if I remember correctly. I think i...

Re: Paul Wetton
Hi David We went at the end of May 29th and 30th. There were a couple of fresh females about and a single fresh looking male. Most of the males were showing signs of wear and tear when we visited. The butterflies may be in better condition a little earlier. It could vary though from year to year dep...

I'm going to actually have a personal diary this year. I'm starting off with some more video footage from 2010. This time of a butterfly that was completely new to me. The Chequered Skipper at Glasdrum Wood. A fantastic spot if you get decent weather and don't mind the midges. http://www.yout...

Fantastic huge birds these, like flying planks. I saw them at the nest in Mull a couple of years ago. Absolutely stunning birds when close up.

Hi Liz If your web host provides a php web gallery it should give instructions on how to set it up then trusted members can have a login name and password and add photos as thet do on UKB. Your webmaster would have administrative rights and be able to select who is allowed to add photos etc. Not sur...

Re: Panasonic Lumix FZ38
You've probably hit 2 nails on the head there Jack. I agree that more zoom equals poorer quality but always for some reason thought that if you keep within the optical zoom range then it should allow crop factors of 10 fairly easily. Maybe not so with a smallish CCD. My Mum will definitely be using ...

Re: Panasonic Lumix FZ38
Question for all you FZ38 experts (Jack). My mother has this camera which pertains to have a zoom of if I remember correctly 18 x optical. She's taken plenty of photos on the best quality setting as far as I am aware but when the photos are zoomed in on the PC or especially on the TV anything past 2...

Re: Mountain Ringlet Video
For Mountain Ringlet at low altitude i.e. Irton Fell the second week of June may be best judging on the condition of the butterflies in 2010. If you get a warm day with some broken cloud and they're on the wing I'd reckon its a cert. More problems with the warm sunny days up in the fells. I'll be in...

Happy New Year to all butterfly enthusiasts out there. Here's a bit of video to spur on those who'll be after this butterfly in 2011. I know a few people have mentioned this species as a target for them this year. Enjoy One poor male was grab...

Re: Resident butterfly, advice needed.
Hi Alix The Small Tortoiseshell would have been hibernating in the room and has probably woken up during the move. Your best bet would be to place him/her in a similar room where it won't be disturbed until the warmer weather arrives in the spring. Maybe it could go back in the boiler room when all ...
