Mountain Ringlet Video

Post by Paul Wetton »

Happy New Year to all butterfly enthusiasts out there.

Here's a bit of video to spur on those who'll be after this butterfly in 2011. I know a few people have mentioned this species as a target for them this year.

Enjoy

One poor male was grabbed by a Crab Spider and suffered the consequences.
Cheers Paul

Thanks for that, Paul. This is a species I'm determined to see this year. If you know any 'hotspots' for them please let me know.

Sounds as though there's a potential UKButterflies outing ready to be announced...count me and Sami in!!! Paul, what's your day rate?

We're planning on hitting Cumbria for subspecies mnemon followed by Ben Lawers for subspecies scotica sometime around late June/early July depending on this year's emergence times. Mountain Ringlet was one of only two breeding species we missed in 2010 (rather embarrassingly the other was Clouded Yellow) so we are VERY keen to catch up with the elusive little blighter this year! For a quick look at our Big Butterfly Year check out my website (cor, what a shameless plug  )

I'd imagine that when it comes to finding Mountain Ringlets it's a case of 'the more eyes the merrier'....so are there any more takers out there?

For Mountain Ringlet at low altitude i.e. Irton Fell the second week of June may be best judging on the condition of the butterflies in 2010.

If you get a warm day with some broken cloud and they're on the wing I'd reckon its a cert. More problems with the warm sunny days up in the fells.

I'll be in for the trip as it'll be before I leave for the Alps if we go early June. I agree Seth it will depend on emergence times.

Have a look at my other video from 2010 at http://www.ibirdz.co.uk/A%20Butterfly%20Year

I know another shameless plug.
Cheers Paul
