Re: Meadow Brown - extra specks

I think this is quite normal for Meadow Brown. If you look at the species specific pages on this site they all have white spots.

Re: Yellow-legged Tortoiseshell Invasion in the Netherlands!

Spent several hours in Weybourne today. Met the finder, saw the bush but not the butterfly. Also checked out Sherringham in the area where one was seen two days ago but no sign. It looks like they've moved on as there were plenty of people looking for them without any success. Apparently the first o...

Re: Yellow-legged Tortoiseshell Invasion in the Netherlands!

I'm hoping to head over to Norfolk this weekend.
If anyone knows anyone with a Y L Tortoiseshell visiting their garden and wouldn't mind someone filming it in exchange for a free "Butterfly Year" DVD please PM me as I'd love to get some film of one of these beauties.
Thanks

Re: Yellow-legged Tortoiseshell Invasion in the Netherlands!

According to Minsmere twitter feed the Y L Tort hasn't been seen since 11 today.

The pictures of the one at Burgh Castle in a garden definitely show pale legs.

Hi Wurzel

Love the diary and the great shots. The background on your first ever Large Blue at Collard is wonderful.

I notice your Ringlet on the 24th is upside down and in the clutches of a dastardly Crab Spider.

Re: dilettante

Great shots.
Your small furry creature could be a Field Vole as it has small eyes and smallish rounded ears indicating it to be a vole. Mice have much bigger bulging eyes. The ears are not really hairy which indicates Field Vole.

Re: July 2014

Hi Phil

I think your hoverflies are probably Eristalis nemorum and the behaviour you describe is the males displaying to the females by hovering directly above them whilst they feed.

Re: Paul Wetton

Hi Pauline Yes we were delighted with the wildlife we saw but I'm going to have to go back and get some more video footage with a camera thats working properly or an operator thats working properly. I hope to go back again this year to look for Black Rats on the Shiant Islands as they are going to b...

Re: Paul Wetton

I promised Pauline I would post a trip report from the Outer Hebrides last year and unfortunately never got round to it. However, going back this year for a week followed by a few days at Glenloy Lodge near Fort William I got my act together and produced a report with the help of Helens photos. Agai...

Hi William

I think your spider is araneus diadematus which is the Garden Spider. I'm no expert so may be corrected on this.

Re: British gorganus Swallowtails

Hi Neil

I guess twitching one of these beauties from Nottingham is a bit of a difficult task especially considering the problems I had with another tailed species last year. What do you think my chances would be in a couple of weeks time.

Many thanks

Floss is doing fine and getting up to mischief as often as she can. She still has a little bone growth to go but should all be ok. She'll be going outside soon so I hope I can teach her to behave as well as your cats with regard to birds and other small creatures. Another set of great photos Pauline...

Re: Pauline

Hi Pauline Just wanted to pass on my sympathies for the loss of your cat. I had my cat Gizmo for 20 years before he was taken away from me due to cancer. I swore I wouldn't have another due to the upset but now have Floss who was unwanted due to being in a road traffic accident. Glad we took her on ...

Re: Parasitoid wasps

I hope the companies that produce these wasps and release them perform some work looking at the impact of their work on the natural environment. If they don't, they should or they should be prevented from releasing these wasps - in my opinion. I've mentioned this before with regard to releasing non ...

Re: Neil Hulme

The shots are particularly great Neil as you manage to get the entire foreground crisp and sharp with sufficient depth of field but manage to get a wonderfully coloured and blurred background. I love them.
