Yeah, and the only ones I've seen this year were in one of those butterfly kits a colleague brought into work  Hope we get some over our way soon.

Re: August 2012

it is easy to overlook things. I mention it as a general reminder to always check settings at the outset of a photo trip! Yep, it's so easily done Mike :| I've mucked up quite a few shots due to forgetting to check the settings, the latest being a whole host of Peacock photos which looked OK on the...

Re: August 2012

Thanks for your comments Wurzel :) .

I'd just like to add I'm glad it was me who found and photographed the open-wing Grayling and not my daughters  . They would have reminded me of my over the top bribe the other week and I'd have had difficulty ducking out of that one  .

Re: millerd

Hi Dave You got some nice pictures there at Bookham Commons. I particularly like the side on comma with cut-out shape and the contrast of it's dark wings with the white legs 8) . Am hoping to make another trip but might have to try and persuade my folks to come with me or get them to spend an hour o...

Re: August 2012

18/08/12 The day of our holiday. Ordinarily I would be pleased to go on holiday but with good weather on the cards I had mixed feelings knowing I would have little chance of any further Brown Hairstreak sorties to Bookham :? . On return I'd be back at work and then the following weekend (1st - 2nd o...

Re: August 2012

Apologies for delayed post:- Venturing out into the field for butterflies have been curtailed for me over the last couple of weeks due to family circumstances and a rush to get ready for a pre-booked one weeks country cottage holiday in Sibton nr.Yoxford; Suffolk. A brief Friday (17th) morning's vis...

Have just read your PD after getting back from my hols. Some fantastic photos there Wurzel :o  . I can't really add any more on top of what has already been said (Peacock underside and Green-veined White (golf ball flower) deserve a mention). Your grass moth; Knowle Church 17th is ...

Re: August 2012

Some recent family issues have had me and the kids confined somewhat to spending a lot of time indoors. Today I got the nod to take the kids out for a couple of hours and so chose to go Bookham Commons where I spent some considerable and succssful time last year looking for Brown Hairstreak. The mor...

Re: Chalkhill Blue aberrations

Thanks for your replies Pete; Guy and Mike. Believe it or not, Bright and Leeds tried just this - resulting in "A MONOGRAPH OF THE BRITISH ABERRATIONS OF THE CHALK-HILL BLUE BUTTERFLY" which details over 200 aberrations (if I remember correctly). I expect after 200 they gave up unable to s...

Re: Chalkhill Blue aberrations

As an observation, most of the abberant postings of Chalkhill blues (or any blue for that matter) show the undersides, with spots either missing or distorted. However at Susies Denbies trip I couldn't help noticing that the males showed variation in their uppersides too. These differences though sub...

Re: (Un)Common Blue.....

My experience with my local site was that the first brood appeared very late, with the numbers about half that of 2011. The emergence seemed strung out, too. My observations of the females was just the same - all were markedly blue with none you could possibly mistake for a Brown Argus. Still waiti...

Hi Wurzel Like your Small Copper shots and the Small Blue in particular  :!: . Also I'm glad I'm not the only one who runs out of battery from time to time  . The Graylings should be around for a couple more weeks yet. I went to Dawney's ridge today with my girls and got my best shots ...

Re: August 2012

Arrived on time this year for Susie's Denbies meet. The largely grey skies were punctured by bits of blue so I was optomistic that this would be a good day for viewing and photography if the rain stayed off. Met up with Susie; Chris C; Phil Underwood and his wife plus Lee Hurrel (nice to put a face ...

Re: August 2012

Thanks for you comments Wurzel. Morning seems a good time for photgraphing this species. today Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell, male Holly Blue You wouldn't be expected to say great sightings for these three species, but so far this year I've seen one fly-by Small tortoiseshel in March, 3 faded peacock...
