Re: Moving trees

When it comes to the move make sure that the trees are well watered a few days before you lift them. I know it makes the root ball heavier but it reduces one of the stresses.

Re: Chiddingfold woods

The problem I have is that I only have access to the 2009 records-on the website-so how can I get these more recent ones? You could either ask the county recorder malcolm.bridge AT ntlworld.com or trampling on the vegetation and killing or maiming the very butterflies they are trying to photograph ...

Re: Chiddingfold woods

Here is what I think is a new one for Oaken Wood-a Dark Green fritillary seen today. P.J.U. 'fraid that the 2010 Species distribution map and report from Malcolm Bridge says "Occasional, but reliable sightings, from Chiddingfold continue ... " but I am sure that he will be delighted with ...

Two butterflies on a stick

I was trying to get a photograph of this Golden-ringed dragonfly when the Meadow Brown turned up closely followed by his friend. Why is it that butterflies are never around when you want them but always appear when you don't want 'em.

Re: Depressing news

I did have the wood burner going last night, but is the forecast weather bad for butterflies? It would certainly seem that it's bad for watching them but that's not the same thing. The drought in the south has been broken and the wild flowers have come on considerably since the first rain about 10 d...

Re: Orange Tip (Early Stages)

Though the young caterpillars eat the leaves of the hedge garlic, the mature ones rest along and appear to eat the end of the seeds pods. Do they actually eat any of the unripened seed. I cannot tell from the few that I have in the garden but the top 4 or 5mm of the pod seems to have disappeared.

Re: Chrysalis

I re-buried it. I suppose that I can dig it up again and see what hatches but it's probably better to let nature take its course.

I have taken Poplar Hawk Moth in a Heath trap this year and I do have a small patch of Rosebay Willowherb.

Chrysalis

This turned up in some old builder's sand in the garden. It ain't a butterfly, I suppose it could be a larger moth. What else has a pupa of about 50mm?

Re: Farmers, Silage and Butterflies

Certainly in the south recent activity in the fields has been haymaking and this year's hay crop looks to be less in volume than last year's disastrous season. Hay will be in short supply and more livestock will have to go to market in the autumn. Farmers need all the silage and hay that they can ge...

Re: Antony Barnett. Vandal convicted at Prees Heath

If I walked through someone's front door when it was left open and sat down in the lounge in front of their television, does anyone really think I'd be treated more sympathetically than if I'd have broken a lock to get there? Then the householder could sue you for trespass, but that is all, the pol...

Re: Antony Barnett. Vandal convicted at Prees Heath

Why does no-one use the old action of Forcible Entry and Detainer, gets them out in no time. Works on squatters, just got to show that some force was used to enter the property.

Re: Who is going to guess this one?

Rats .... right for the butterfly. I fear it says something about lepidopterists who can identify butterflies by their bums; I can't identify them when they are prostrate in front of me. The plant was in fact Bird's Foot trefoil with a shoot of probably Bedstraw, just to confuse. Green Hairstreak 2....
