My First Pearl Bordered

After seeing Petes report on his visit to Bentley Wood, I decided to go down and try my luck.
Got plenty of open wing shots but struggled with a decent closed wing one.
I reckon overall to have seen at least 7 individuals, actual sightings throughout the day as I plodded up and down the area ran into scores.
Heres a couple more underwing shots, both far from perfect but they do show the lovely markings.

That second pic with its wings out is great. love the pics, they are very colourful

Steve.. I use a Nikon D200 with a Sigma 150mm macro.

I use a Nikon D70 with the sigma 150 myself but using your second photo as an example you have the whole butterfly in focus?
I add the question mark as when I use this lens the plane of focus is so critical..I can never get the whole butterfly in focus as you do???
Any tips??

To be honest Steve for every good one there are many that don't make the mark
I don't really have any magic formular I'm afraid
I think its a case of trying to get square on to your subject, so that everything that you want in focus is as near as possible on the same level and also use as high an F stop as possible to maximise DOF.
In the case of the PBF they seem to hold their wings open very flat so that makes life a bit easier, with the Brown Argus that I was shooting today for instance, they would only bask with the wings at an angle, and so a portion of the wings is OOF even with a high Fstop.
Not much help I'm afraid, but there it is
