Saw this skipper on lavender today at about 11:00 in Marlow Bucks. It kept its wings closed but I’m hoping someone might be able to id it for me. A small butterfly.

Hi Hannes, welcome to the site. This is a male Large Skipper :)

To add to Paul's (a.k.a. Bugboy's) ID ...

1. The markings seen on the underside make this a Large Skipper - there are no white markings, so it's not a Silver-spotted Skipper (which have yet to emerge).

2. Look at the length of the abdomen, which projects beyond the wing edges. This is normally only ever seen in a male, whose abdomen is long and relatively-thin. Whereas that of a female is wider, and shorter, since it is full of eggs.

Cheers,

- Pete
