Our local Duke of Burgandy site is also home to a huge colony of the glorious Lady Orchid (orchis purpurea) ,which is found in mainly Kent ,with one or two localities in other counties ,they are very large showy orchids ,and where they do occur ,they occur in large numbers ,as at Denge Wood . Some may reach 6-700 mm tall ,and are very similar to the much rarer Military Orchid ,which has been claimed for Kent but all herbarium specimens turned out to be O .Purpurea. Once again it is the colour varieties that really datch the eye !
