I have just returned from visiting a butterfly site where I would expect to see 11 species at this time of year. However, due to very overcast skies only two species were seen. One meadow brown and several ringlets flying quite happily and posing for photos. Is this usual?

I find that overcast skies are the best conditions for quite a few species who will just sit there, quite happily, while they warm up - perfect photography subjects!

Cheers,

And you get better, brighter, truer colours than in bright sun. As long as the air temperature is high enough you should expect enough activity to kerp you occupied :)
