I photographed a ringlet mating today with what looked like a meadow brown. Is this possible? Also, saw a male black-tailed skimmer today on the IOW.

Yes indeed it is possible. I believe there are a number of pictures of Meadow Brown males mating with a range of species on this site. Male MB seem to have a bit of a philandering cross species reputation!
