i have just finished watching this excellent film, which has a strong lepidopteral theme. it stars Terence Stamp and the appropriately named Samantha Eggar.

the opening scenes show TS capturing a Camberwell Beauty.

later on we see his extensive collection of dead butterflies including "Medium Brown Fritillary"...

i am sure that the deranged lepidopterist in the film does not resemble any of us on UKB

Hi Charles
I have had this film, including the cinema trailer, for a number of years and knew about the CB in the opening scene.

This film has always interested me as some of the filming locations are in my area.
FYI the house that features prominently is Gabrials Manor, Marsh Green Road, Edenbridge , Kent.
Contributors to the Reel Streets 'then and now' web site have yet to gain access it seems:

The field behind the house where the CB is caught is regularly used for a boot fair! (at the junction of B2028/B2026).

Hello all,
In his book " Living with butterflies" L. Hugh Newman, devotes about 3 full pages to "The Collector " he advised on some scenes concerning
moths/butterflies,(and supplied some )in the film, and was apparently asked( by the producer Jud Kinberg) if they would be able to do some shooting ,using his home at Westerham, but his wife declined, and as you say they used a house in Edenbridge instead, I,ve never seen the film myself.
Regards Allan,W.
