Help with ID?

Post by Katrina »

My sister photographed this butterfly at Boxhill at the weekend. I am not very good ad closed wing IDs . I wondered if it might be a Common Blue but was a bit put off by the double dot at the head end in both wings. Can anyone ID this?

I never like to tread on the powerful toes of forum 'big beasts' such as Guy Padfield, Roger Gibbons, et al, but if this is a UK butterfly then I cannot see it being anything other than a Common Blue with exceptionally enlarged underside spots.

There are no black stripes through the wing margins, which rules out Adonis, and the cell spot would presumably rule out Brown Argus.

It's quite a specimen, and most probably an aberration, though I would await judgement from someone more authoritative than I.

Many thanks David. I thought that was the likeliest but was far from confident. :D
