I have a Canon S3 which will focus down to around 3 feet. I added the Canon 1.5x teleconverter, mainly to get birds, and although it only focusses to six feet, a minimal crop will give pretty good definition on larger butterflies. This peacock was shot in early evening sunshine from six feet away.
