Wood White - Favourite Photo 2016

Week 20

The final week! We made it through the Winter and Spring is just round the corner, the Snowdrops and Crocci are blooming, the Daffs won't be too far behind and some have seen and even photographed the first awaking Hibernators :D Here's wishing everyone a very productive 2017 season :D

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos - just to make it easier to organise and keep everything on track so that we can enjoy this throughout the winter months? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As like last year details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Wood White

There was really only one choice for my fave of this species this year. On both occasions when I’ve encountered them in the past there has been a moment at some point during the day when I’ve set my camera to ‘Sports mode’ and clicked away whilst the Wood White takes off. Out of the many, many shots taken there would occasionally be one which would make a passable ‘open wing’ shot.
This year however I was lucky enough to b with Philzoid when he found a Wood White apparently roosting with wings wide open. Despite several reasonable suggestions for this behaviour I’m still as a loss to explain it and so instead I enjoy the opportunity to see the wing-tip markings – the rounded black blob and the couple of dashes that I never realised were there.

My favourite is also a shot I managed down at Chiddingfold of a second brood male - with open wings.

I managed to get the female of this interacting pair open-winged as well, but the camera angle, though fine for the male, really wasn't for the female.

As this is the last post of this series, I'll add another couple standard favourites posing more typically - one from the first brood and one from the second. The first brood have much more grey scaling on the underside.

I took some of my shots of the Wood White for the very first time last year, ( rather excitingly ) I was with Pauline and my Husband at the time and kept swapping lenses :D Thanks to Pauline who showed me where they were and as it happened because of the weather being so bad and my Husband not being too well, they and the Silver Studded Blue were the only shots of Butterflies I took that week but with both being my first sightings I was satisfied. :D
It was the 11th of June. Goldie :D

I was happy to get some nice shots at Chiddingfold in May. The best was this female.

My 2016 Wood Whites were seen on a cloudy Spring Bank Holiday Monday afternoon at Ryton Wood in Warwickshire. Numbers here are never great so I was pleased to see at least 6 or 7 scattered along the main ride and a couple of side paths.

Ducked out again on this species in the UK in 2016, but ample compensation was provided by them being quite common in the French Alps in July, as well as the Pyrenees in May/June, where this individual was photographed:

I find that the Wood White is always a very photogenic species. My favourite from last year was this second-brood individual. I like the contrast with the red seeds.
