After a particularly hard overnight frost here in Crawley, I awoke to find a strange ice formation in my birdbath.

It turns out to be an Ice Spike https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_spike which is supposed to be quite rare.
It is triangular in section, with a maximum length of 12cm and vertical height of 9cm. It also appears to have a narrow airspace up the centre. The scale is shown by the 2p piece.

That's fascinating, Vince. I bet the birds weren't too impressed, though ...

Thanks Guy,

Such have been the temperatures here since 18th January, that the spike has not yet melted.
In the meantime, the birds have been provided with alternative facilities :D
