I'm assuming this is some sort of violet. Can anyone confirm please?
The flower is about an inch and a half across and it was found today in local woodland. There appeared to be some minor predation of its leaves so I'm hoping that fritillaries are there.

I believe the flower you are looking at Eccles is Vinca Minor which has two nicknames namely "Periwinkle or Creeping Mytle".
It is a vigourous low growing plant that is an ideal plant should you have a piece of ground you wish to cover quickly.

Chose the first website for identification for you @ http://www.first-nature.com/flowers/vinca_minor.asp

Whether it be a member of the Violet family of what larva uses it as its food plant would take more investigation.

Hope it has at least helped in identifing the plant for you.

Cheers
