Mountain Ringlet - Favourite Photo of 2016

Week 11

Week 11 and time to wish everyone a Merry Solstice and then a Happy Christmas! :D

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos - just to make it easier to organise and keep everything on track so that we can enjoy this throughout the winter months? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As like last year details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Have a goodun

A detour to Irton Fell on the return from Scotland in early June gave me an hour in which to look for Mountain Ringlets. Cloudy but reasonably warm conditions produced twenty or so individuals but getting a good photo in the limited time was impossible due to them taking short flights and dropping low down in the grass. The shot below was the best I managed.

A dozen or so of this species seen in the French Alps in early July. As with Neil, getting a half decent image was impossible due to the butterflies insisting on coming down in the long grasses:

This Mountain Ringlet was seen at around 2,200 m alt. on July 21st during a day out in the Swiss Alps with a well known British-Swiss lepidopterist. :D
