Large Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2015

Week 9

So continues sequence of posts giving one and all the opportunity to showcase their favourite shots of 2015!

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As like last year details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Have a goodun

My favourite photo has got to be the one I took at Hall-Lee- Brook my local haunt on the10th July. It also stands out as one of the few sunny days we got Goldie :D

I confess that I dithered over choosing this one as my favourite. The 'other' pic was a flat-on top-view, with the plain background that many people favour - but I thought it was just too boring!

This one has more 'character', with its 'balletic' pose - hind foot in the air!

This was a species that seemed to have a very extended brood this year. I saw my first one on the 30th May whilst chasing Marsh Fritillaries and my final one was seen on the 3rd of August on Chobham Common whilst after Grayling, and she was in good enough condition to have a week or two's life in her!

Anyway I've plumped for this one as my fav from Chobham Common on the 22nd July

A very arresting image! I love the not-quite symmetrical view and it would be a 'favourite' for me, too :)

I saw loads of Large Skippers about this year, in fact there were times that the males became a bit of a nuisance by chasing off other species just as I was about to take a photo.

Hi Folks,

Here is one from last July (south of France, west Var), at the climatic antipodes of where we are now.
Looking forward to getting back into the field with the sun on my back.

Large Skipper

This was another species that I seemed to take few shots of after the initial ‘discovery’ of my first for the year. Of the few that I did take this was my favourite because of the ridiculous pose – upside down on a bending blade of grass and to top the comical characterisation – struggling to wind its proboscis back in as well!

This is my favourite Large Skipper of 2015 - taken 5th July - I like it's appearance of riding the grass seed head, I can almost see it bobbing up and down.

The first one of each season on my local patch is always special, and here is that one from the 5th of June this year in typical pose.

I was also surprised by this late male, right at the other end of the summer in my sister's garden near York on 23rd August.
