Any spider identifiers out there?

Post by CFB »

I saw this spider this morning having problems with its web. This was in the Alpes-Maritimes at around 200 metres altitude. Can anyone identify it for me. Thanks in advance.

If it was in the uk I'd say araneus diadematus. Don't know if there are any continental species that look that similar.

Thanks bugboy. I'll look at some photos of Araneus diadematus on the Internet to try to confirm your ID.

Bugboy could be right, but there's also Araneus quadratus to consider - it's the heaviest UK species. Both species are variable.

best wishes

Hi Colin,
I have seen this spider before in Marseilles in 2013 and 2014. Both times precisely during the month of October.
It looks like Araneus diadematus when you Google it, but I'm no expert.
On my photos you can see the back markings.

Essex Bertie,
I looked this one up as well. But as my photo was of the underside (I think :? ), it's difficult (for me) to differentiate between the two.

Chris,
I don't think there is any doubt about yours being Araneus diadematus due to the cross on its back. I love your third photo.
