hello all - I chased this little fellow around the garden but couldn't get very close - please can someone let me know its name as I couldn't see it listed?

The best I can do is identify it as a moth rather than a butterfly, though I haven't a clue regarding the species - can't say I've ever seen this before.

thanks David - I reckon it was a butterfly rather than a moth. Never seen one like this. I shall keep an eye out to see if I can find it again

The fact that it's seeking shade is indicative that it is a moth. A butterfly almost certainly wouldn't do this.

I'll follow this thread with interest because there are a few on here with decent moth ID skills and I shall be interested to learn what it is.

Difficult to say from the photo, but Yellow Shell is a possibilty (very variable in colour & size) also its easily disturbed during the day. Hope this is of help.

I agree, Yellow Shell. It's right on timing too.

A European butterfly, the Greenish Black Tip, is a possibility although this would make it an extremely unusual sighting. This species is normally found in North Africa and Southern Spain.
