Hi Hamadryad,
I feel sure someone will be alone soon with some local Herts knowledge.
What is a wabber. I looked it up, but all I could find was a urban slang meaning for, A person who consistently indulges in Work Avoidance Behaviour. Which means I must also be a wabber.

Aldbury Nowers Nature Reserve near Tring is quite good. Only discovered it myself this year. Currently flying there are Dingy and Grizzled skippers, Brown Argus, Common Blue, Small Blue, Green Hairstreak, Brimstone. Lots more apparently occur according to the site info boards there.
Hope that helps

Although 'Wild About Britain' has closed down, there is a new site 'Wild About the British Isles' (WABI) where several old WABbers are posting.

I was briefly a wabber then. Even I found that forum too combative, and that's saying something
. I'll never forget that poor girl asking where she could go to photograph Kingfishers, she got slaughtered.

That's true gruditch,I got to say a discussion about big cat's always ended up in a slanging match

Hi hamadryad61,
For woodland butterflies, you might try Bricket Wood (Common) north-east of Watford. Silver-washed Fritillaries, White Admirals and Purple Emperors are found there. The last confirmed sighting of the Brown Hairstreak for Hertfordshire recorded here in 1998.
Good luck
