Hi Chris,
Its been some years since I've seen them but I'm fairly sure this is Spotted Fritillary, Melitaea didyma. I believe the larvae feed on plantains as per your picture.

It certainly is plantain. I was surprised this week by the lack of Spotted Frits, as they have already been around chez moi near Marseilles for 2 weeks now. Perhaps here in the Aveyron, being further north and higher (400 m alt.), the season is later.
