Week 18
Almost there!

So continues sequence of posts giving one and all the opportunity to showcase their favourite shots of 2014 (or the last time you saw one)!

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As like last year details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Have a goodun

The only photo I took of a Small White in 2014 was of this individual that had fallen prey to a Crab Spider.

Small Whites seemed to do well enough early in the season with plenty around at my local spots and I saw good numbers down in Dorset in early September but I didn't see that many at any other times. Most of those that I did see were usually on the move so consequently I didn't manage to get many photos.

An early one from my garden...

...and a later one from Dorset where I saw a number of butterflies of various species caught by spiders on the slopes above Durdle Door, as this one nearly was, note the spider in its web behind the left forewing tip. In this case I am happy to say the butterfly flew off unscathed.

This is disgraceful and unforgiveable (and I will make a mental note to do better this year) but the only image of Small White I have taken in the entirety of 2014 is this 'record shot' from Kilvey Hill on 19th April:

Butterflies from each end of the season again. Though this species is obviously around, they tend to get overlooked when more exciting things are flying. They are also more difficult to approach in hotter, sunnier weather.

I saw my first Small White on 30th March, but couldn't manage a decent shot.

By April, they were more obliging and here is a local female from 26th.

Next is a fresh-looking male from close to six months later (5th October), also from my local patch.

Small White Llanachaeron 04-08-2014

This was my favourite Small White shot and it was taken in early August in the grounds of Llanachaeron House and due to the timing it was either a second or third brood. It was one of the easiest to choose yet one of the hardest to describe why – it just felt right and I just knew it was the right choice – nuff said  .

I don't often find myself photographing Small Whites but, this female makes a lovely exception. This one was taken in Turkey, early June 2014.
