...a friend of mine is adament the word is spelled butterflys, yet I see it here spelled butterflies. Who is right

You have the Oxford dictionary behind you! It will also tell you the spelling of 'adamant'

I have the useful Dictionary add-on installed in my Firefox browser, which is a great help - it highlights mis-spelled words as I type messages, like this one.
