2014 Outstanding Contribution Award

Post by Pete Eeles »

From the homepage:

"The first of two Outstanding Contribution Awards for 2014 has been awarded to the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. This is in recognition of the incredible amount of support and encouragement that the Hope Department of Entomology and Library, in particular, have provided to UK Butterflies over recent years. This is the first time that the award has been given to an organisation, rather than an individual, and is in special recognition of the role that the museum has played in helping bring the UK Butterflies website to a whole new level."

What a great choice! Having had a " behind the scenes" tour with Darren earlier this year I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the team and the massive task they have in cataloging their huge collection - with many millions of specimens from around the world still in freezers - many collected years ago.
Anyone who has had the good fortune to visit and speak to Darren will know of his obsession with dung beetles and the poo required to trap them - a tale in itself!
Well done to the panel for making a well deserved award.
BWs
Mark. :)
The wonder of the world, the beauty and the power, the shapes of things, their colours lights and shades, these I saw. Look ye also while life lasts.

Can't say I'm too au fait with this organisation, but if it's good enough for Pete Eeles, then I'm happy to applaud it commensurately.

Actually, it was a team vote - so myself, Guy, Vince and Gary :) ... as well as a few others that I sounded out.

Cheers,

The award certainly went to the right place. It is a great honour to be able to visit and have access to study their historic butterfly collections.
