Standing outside work today and a butterfly landed about 10 foot away. My immediate thought was oh wow, a green hairstreak, what's it doing here? it didn't stop for long and only as i was walking back into work i thought hang on..... it's a bit late. Is it unheard of?

Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,
Very rare, but not unheard of. Other spring species such as Orange Tip also surprise us occasionally at this time of year.

In 43 years of butterflying I've seen exactly one, on 9th October 2010:

That was after early snow, followed by a warm period, so I put it down to the pupa confusing the cues. I revisited the same site several times afterwards and saw no more anomalous emergees.
