ID for caterpillars please

Post by Chris Jackson »

Hi All,
I returned to a place where I had seen a Green-underside Blue laying on Spanish Broom flower buds 2 weeks ago, hoping to find some caterpillars - well I did, but I don't think they were what I was looking for. Can someone ID them for me please?
Caterpillar 1:

Caterpillar 2:

Caterpillar 3 (VERY BIG - this one measured 80 mm long !!!):

Context - Gemenos, near Aubagne in the South of France:

Thanks, Chris

Hi, I've managed to ID Caterpillar No. 1 above myself, quite surprisingly. It is Orgyia antiqua (Rusty Tussock Moth).
I'm still missing the other two Caterpillar IDs though.
Thanks, Chris

I'd say the last is Apopestes spectrum. I wouldn't know otherwise, but someone ID'd my picture of the same...

Thanks JKT,
After putting Apopestes spectrum in Google images, it certainly looks right. It doesn't look like there is a common name in English. In French (for my records) its called "Le Spectre".
And Spanish Broom is its host plant !!!!

Chris.
