Aberrant Green Hairstreak

Post by Willrow »

I've not found a great deal of information on aberrant Green Hairstreak in either Russwurm's Aberrations of British Butterflies or from the archives in the Cockayne Collection. However Callophyrs rubi is not exactly known for aberrants, so therefore let me quote Russwurm - "The only variation of the upperside recorded is a slight bleaching or ochreous colouring on the outer halfs of the wings. The beautiful green underside may occasionally be brownish and it is then known as ab. brunnea Tutt. I would therefore think that this individual rightly qualifies for that title.

This individual shows decidedly beige to brown or ochreous as Russwurm describes it, this individual was photographed on May 5th (2014) at Swellshill Bank on Rodborough Common, Near Stroud in Gloucestershire.

Nice find, Bill. It's certainly an aberrant of some form; I've never seen one lacking so much green as that.

Very nice, Bill. It even seems to have chosen a browning leaf to sit on!

Thanks gents, I was nicely surprised at the aberrant information and images that are available on the Species Specific Albums pages, however, the resources available on UK Butterflies are exceptional and thats no surprise :) so very well done and thanks to Pete and all the other Admin staff that work unselfishly to provide us all with this superb website
