Can you ID these Skippers (?) for me ?

Post by Paul33 »

I think they are all skippers but I'm not sure. All shot around Northamptonshire/Cambridgeshire late last summer.

Any IDs would be appreciated.

Hi Paul and welcome to UK Butterflies :)

Your butterflies are:
1. Large Skipper male
2. Small Copper male
3. Large Skipper male
4. Large Skipper male
5. Brown Argus female
6. Essex Skipper male

There is a butterfly identification section here: http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/species_ ... y2stoXn0_w which will link you into the separate pages for each species.

Hi Paul,

It's a nice shot of the Essex Skipper :) , showing very well the linear scent mark on the wing, which distinguishes this species from a male Small Skipper. Separating the females is a lot more difficult and frequently leads to debates on these pages! The lively little 'non-Skippers' you photographed are more brightly coloured than any British skippers. The Brown Argus often causes confusion, mainly with the female Common Blue, so it's worth learning about the differences from these.
